This puma portrait was taken at the Waterfall Park in the highlands of Costa Rica. The park includes an extensive wildlife exhibition and this Central American mountain lion was in one of the large enclosures. While it seemed quite healthy and at ease, it's eyes seemed to express a mix of sadness and resentment, which I tried to capture in the picture.

I taught myself film photography in an environment that was both endlessly inspiring and frustratingly difficult: the high Andes of Ecuador, where vivid colors and fascinating subject were regularly swallowed up by the harsh contrast of strong sunlight. Upon returning to the States I had to limit my photographic work for nearly 20 years. Finally, with more free time available and relocation to the stunning foothills of Colorado, photography has reclaimed my passion. I hope some of these images bring you a fraction of the enjoyment and inspiration I experienced capturing them.
