Artist's Description
There seems to be sadness in this old lion's eyes, but still a lot of pride showing through as well. It's hard to accept such a majestic animal living in captivity. I hope this image, taken at the Denver Zoo, helps convey what a treasure these big cats are along with some sense of the sadness that accompanies their loss of freedom.
About Lowell Monke
I taught myself film photography in an environment that was both endlessly inspiring and frustratingly difficult: the high Andes of Ecuador, where vivid colors and fascinating subject were regularly swallowed up by the harsh contrast of strong sunlight. Upon returning to the States I had to limit my photographic work for nearly 20 years. Finally, with more free time available and relocation to the stunning foothills of Colorado, photography has reclaimed my passion. I hope some of these images bring you a fraction of the enjoyment and inspiration I experienced capturing them.
