Artist's Description
There are only a few thousand great green macaws in Central America. I got this photo while visiting the ARA Green Macaw Refuge Center in Costa Rica. They have dozens of injured, orphaned, etc. great greens that they are rehabbing in preparation for reintroduction into the wild. This one is actually in the wild, but still hanging around the center. As it expands its territory it will eventually become part of a wild community of Great Greens and stop returning. At any one time about a dozen of these spectacularly beautiful birds are flying free around the observation platform near the center.
About Lowell Monke
I taught myself film photography in an environment that was both endlessly inspiring and frustratingly difficult: the high Andes of Ecuador, where vivid colors and fascinating subject were regularly swallowed up by the harsh contrast of strong sunlight. Upon returning to the States I had to limit my photographic work for nearly 20 years. Finally, with more free time available and relocation to the stunning foothills of Colorado, photography has reclaimed my passion. I hope some of these images bring you a fraction of the enjoyment and inspiration I experienced capturing them.
