Artist's Description
Two bighorn sheep seem to be mugging for the camera. the farthest one has his tongue out but the nearer one is exhibiting what is called the Flehman response, lifting its top lip above the upper gum (bighorn sheep don't have upper teeth) to expose its jacobson's gland, an olefactory organ used during the rut to sniff out ewes coming into heat.
About Lowell Monke
I taught myself film photography in an environment that was both endlessly inspiring and frustratingly difficult: the high Andes of Ecuador, where vivid colors and fascinating subject were regularly swallowed up by the harsh contrast of strong sunlight. Upon returning to the States I had to limit my photographic work for nearly 20 years. Finally, with more free time available and relocation to the stunning foothills of Colorado, photography has reclaimed my passion. I hope some of these images bring you a fraction of the enjoyment and inspiration I experienced capturing them.
