This is a male hooded merganser taking flight from the South Platte River, near Denver, Colorado. These ducks winter in the area and are fun to watch and photograph, especially when the light shows off the colors of both their feathers and the reflections on the river.
I taught myself film photography in an environment that was both endlessly inspiring and frustratingly difficult: the high Andes of Ecuador, where vivid colors and fascinating subject were regularly swallowed up by the harsh contrast of strong sunlight. Upon returning to the States I had to limit my photographic work for nearly 20 years. Finally, with more free time available and relocation to the stunning foothills of Colorado, photography has reclaimed my passion. I hope some of these images bring you a fraction of the enjoyment and inspiration I experienced capturing them.
